How It Was Crafted

Shana Ostrowiecki begins by working the clay by hand to prepare it for sculpting the mug. Once the main shape is established, Shana Ostrowiecki uses a variety of hand-building techniques to craft distinctive surface designs, incorporating intuitive mark-making that adds intricate detail.

After shaping and smoothing, the clay dries thoroughly over several days, preparing it for the next step. The mugs are bisque fired at approximately 1855°F, then sanded and refined before receiving multiple coats of hand-painted glaze.

A final kiln firing at around 2000°F deepens the glaze and reinforces the ceramic, resulting in beautifully crafted, unique mugs.
